Hello, I'm Kay Flissman

"Following on from completing a Fine Art degree, I am passionate about creating group spaces that encourage self-led education and exploration.

Excited to learn more about the forest school ethos, I started out volunteering with GreenWise Education back in 2018, before qualifying as a Forest School Leader in 2021. Since then I have been leading after-school & holiday clubs, sessions for home educated children, pre-schoolers and their parents. I joined the team at Forest Schooling UK in 2022, running clubs & school-time sessions in Kingston Upon Thames.

I have always been committed to caring for the environment. I

am currently a committee member of The Friends of Berrylands

Nature Reserve, where I co-lead conservation sessions."

What is Forest School?

At Forest School we seek to foster compassion towards nature, as children learn fully about the natural world through hands-on experience. Their learning and development takes place through play, inspired by the plentiful natural resources in found their local forest: sticks, leaves, flowers, water, earth, stones, snow etc.

Every day is different, with continually changing seasons providing new opportunities. Sessions are child-led, meaning that children have the freedom to choose how to spend their time, and are encouraged to follow their own path. This promotes enthusiasm and curiosity: an ideal state of mind for deep learning to take place.

Each child is valued as an individual, with their own unique personality, interests and style & pace of learning. Activities can include building a den, designing an obstacle course, learning a new craft skill and many more. When children are ready they can climb trees, learn how to use tools safely and see how to build a fire, under the close supervision of a qualified Forest School Practitioner.

Spending time in the woods together, children have the time and space to be themselves and make friends. Sessions involve a mixed-age group, allowing children to share skills and learn how to support each other.
